About Me

I was born in Chatham in 1949. We came to the island shortly after as my Grandfather was in the navy. He was stationed at the dockyard. We lived at 103 Jefferson Road. We moved to Southdown Road, Halfway around 1959. My father was Ted Bentley, he was quite well known and a bus driver. I had a step brother Ronald Bentley. I went to Sheerness Technical School. I got a good education there, but it was based on fear due to the tyrannical headmaster. I left the island around 1967, when I went to college in London. Then I joined the Merchant Navy for around four years. After that, I joined the BBC and moved around the country in various jobs. Finally, I left the BBC in 1989 and became a freelance engineer. My work has taken me all over the world, and I currently live in the USA. All thanks to Sheerness.

It always amazes me where Sheppeyites turn up. The furthest is South Island New Zealand who came into the Heritage Centre a little while ago
